Broadleaf Group Applauds South Africa’s Rooftop Solar Momentum

In a recent revelation by Eskom’s Generation Adequacy Report, South Africa witnesses a phenomenal upsurge in rooftop solar energy. From a modest 2,264MW in July 2022, the figures have soared to an impressive 5,440MW by March 2024, marking a significant leap in solar energy adoption across the nation. This exponential growth underscores the rapid expansion of solar power in South Africa’s energy landscape.

The report highlights the evolution of private solar generation, with gradual growth observed from July to November 2022, followed by a remarkable acceleration from November 2022 to November 2023. Notably, Eskom’s estimations for rooftop solar generation reached a peak of 5,440MW in February and March 2024, showcasing the sustained momentum of solar energy adoption.

However, Eskom cautions that monthly fluctuations in figures may not solely reflect the number of installations during that period. Factors such as weather conditions, particularly cloudy days, can influence the reported numbers, with the impact likely distributed over preceding months.

Gauteng emerges as a frontrunner in rooftop solar generation, significantly alleviating pressure on the power grid with its contribution accounting for nearly a quarter of the country’s total. KwaZulu-Natal closely follows, with substantial contributions from businesses and households with rooftop installations. The Western Cape also demonstrates remarkable growth, indicating a shift towards sustainable energy solutions.

The introduction of solar panel tax rebates by Finance Minister Enoch Godongwana in February 2023 has played a pivotal role in incentivizing rooftop solar adoption. This initiative allowed tax-paying South Africans to claim 25% back on their solar panel tax, up to a maximum of R15,000, spurring initial excitement among consumers and installers alike.

However, while the rebate scheme initially generated enthusiasm within the industry, its impact fell short of expectations.

As South Africa continues to navigate its energy transition, the surge in rooftop solar generation stands as a testament to the nation’s commitment to sustainable and renewable energy sources.
